One of the more intriguing new shows coming up in 2010 is NBC’s “Day One”, from former “Heroes” producer Jesse Alexander. The show was originally envisioned as a 13-episode first season, but that was eventually shortened to a four-hour mini-series. Now, at the NBC TV Critics Association press tour, the network has confirmed that the show will be shortened yet again to a two-hour movie.

The alien-invasion show, which began life as a 13-episode series, then became a four-hour miniseries, will now air as a two-hour movie. The good news is that it will also be a back-door pilot — meaning that if it performs well, NBC could pull the trigger on more episodes.

For now, though, the two hours is all NBC has shot. The now-movie focuses on a small group of survivors of an invasion and stars David Lyons (“ER”), Julie Gonzalo (“Eli Stone”), Carly Pope (“Dirt,” “24″), Catherine Dent (“The Shield”) and Xander Berkeley (“24″). The show’s status as a “back door pilot”, for those who don’t know, means the network wants to see how the show does before it commits to a full season. If the two-hour movie doesn’t make an impact with audiences, there probably won’t be a show.
